Hiking Crabtree Falls
We had the best time this past weekend (July 2018), hiking Crabtree Falls with friends. Crabtree Falls is located in the George Washington National Forest, part of the Blue Ridge Parkway (National Park Service). It's hard for me to believe we've lived here for 35 years and have never made our way to the Falls.
Crabtree Falls is one of the tallest sets of waterfalls in the United States east of the Mississippi River. It is located approximately an hour south of downtown Charlottesville via US 29 South and Tye River Road (Rt 56). The hike is strenuous but definitely do-able. And you don't have to hike very far to enjoy the falls, as the trail meanders back and forth up the falls via switchbacks and viewing stations. I recommend it!
There are LOADS of fun, outdoor recreational opportunities in the Charlottesville area. The best resource we've found is the Charlottesville-Albemarle Recreation Guide, developed by Charlottesville Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Activities in the guide include hiking, cycling, mountain biking, canoeing , kayaking, fishing, golfing, horseback riding, and more. Also, there are website links to visit for more detailed information. Above all else, there is something fun for everyone here!
