Albemarle County is a beautiful home to approximately 106,000 residents. The county encompasses over 700 square miles surrounding the City of Charlottesville. It is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, close to the amazing Shenandoah National Park and the Skyline Drive. Albemarle County is located approximately 110 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. and 70 miles west of the Virginia state capital, Richmond.
The area is home to the much-loved City of Charlottesville’s Historic Downtown Pedestrian Mall and to the University of Virginia. The Charlottesville area has two award-winning hospitals, the University of Virginia Hospital and Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. Both have extensions throughout the county as well.
The area is also very rich in history, with, among other places of interest, the homes of three US Presidents. In the area or close by are Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, James Monroe’s Highland, and James Madison’s Montpelier.
It’s easy to assume that the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County are one in the same, but they are two distinct entities, with their own governing bodies, taxes, etc.
